Challenges of implementing 5G in Nigeria

Infrastructure Challenges:

• One of the main challenges to 5G implementation in Nigeria is inadequate infrastructure. A national 5G rollout requires the installation of numerous base stations, fiber optics, and other telecommunications infrastructure. This is currently lacking in many regions in Nigeria.

Cost of Implementation:

• The cost of implementing 5G technology is high, and it could take years for telecom operators to
  fully recover their investment. Also, the required devices to access 5G services (like 5G-enabled smartphones and routers) are expensive for many Nigerians. This is been taken care of, as Airtel and Mtn, came out with a buy and pay small small initiative. This has enable many Nigerians to buy a 5G enable smart phones and pay installmentally.

Regulatory Issues:

• The ongoing regulatory challenges in Nigeria may delay or complicate the rollout of 5G. Policy must evolve to ensure that telecom companies have the right incentives and legal conditions to expand the 5G network to other regions of the federation.

Digitally Divide:

• While 5G promises to improve internet connectivity in urban areas, rural areas may be left behind, with large parts of the country still lacking basic internet access. For instance in my village, we hardly
  have internet network except we go up hill. This gap could widen with the focus on 5G rollouts in urban areas.

Health Concerns:

• Some Nigerians are concerned about potential health risks from 5G radiation. While scientific studies have not conclusively proven that 5G causes harm, public perception may lead to resistance to the new technology, particularly among communities without adequate awareness or education on the issue.

Security Risks:

• With more devices being connected to the internet via the 5G network, cybersecurity risks will increase. There is needs to ensure that the 5G network been deployed is secure from cyber attacks and data breaches.

It’s important for the government, telecom operators, and other stakeholders to collaborate in addressing these issues to ensure a smooth and successful 5G rollout.
