GSMA Welcomes Tariff Adjustment, Calls for Further Policy Reforms

The Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) has welcomed the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) decision to approve a 50% tariff increase for mobile network operators. This move is expected to unlock over $150 million in additional mobile network investment, expanding 4G coverage to 94% of the population and enabling mobile internet access for an additional 9 million people. The GSMA believes this decision will increase investment in telecommunications infrastructure, improve the quality of service for consumers and brings in opportunities for innovation and economic growth. However, they also advice on the need for further policy reforms to amplify the impact of the tariff increase.

Some of the key policy reforms the GSMA is calling for include:

  • Simplifying Right of Way Permits: Making the process to accelerate infrastructure deployment easier.
  • Carrying out the Laws for Important National Infrastructure: Protecting important telecom assets to make sure they stay strong and dependable.
