How Nigerians Are Copin With The New Tariffs Hike In Telecom Sector

Tariffs Hike

The recent 50% increase in telecom tariffs approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), comes at a time when Nigerians are already struggling with inflation, high fuel costs, and an overall increase in the cost of living. This is the first hike in nearly 11 years and the NCC has justified this tariff increase as a way to sustain telecom services.

The Nigerian government approved the 50% increase in telecommunication tariffs, which is necessary for sustaining telecom operations and improving service quality. For some time now, the Nigerian telecom sector has struggled with declining revenue, rising operational costs, and challenges in attracting investment for network expansion. The tariff increase will ensure continued investment in network upgrades and service reliability.

When this was implemented, a lot of people received it with different opinions, with some saying that the administration lacks an economic policy with a human face. But some staked holders says that, the price hike will translate into tangible improvements, addressing issues like persistent network failure, which has led to substantial business losses. It will address infrastructure limitations, high-cost spectrum, and outdated technology used across Nigeria.

We anticipate that the additional investment will go into network upgrading from 3G to 4G and the expansion of 5G coverage. Despite having 4G coverage, about 60% of the Nigerian population is not using mobile internet due to a lack of smartphones or network instability, and many find it difficult to access data.
